Wiley

This book is dedicated to Wiley, who as a pup I
rescued from under an old vacant house in a poor
neighborhood. For the last fifteen years he has managed to
connect with our family in a magical way, with his uncanny
ability to sense our need for his companionship and love.

The book is also in memory of the following cast of
characters: Skeeter, Bouncer, Duke, Tasha, Muffin,
Gibraltar, Astro, and Buster, all dogs that I grew up with
over the years who supplied me with a rich field of
experiences that have engraved in me an inner sense of the
extraordinary connection between a human being and his
dog.

GIVE RESCUE DOGS A SECOND
CHANCE

Wiley’s story is rooted in personal experiences of rescuing
dogs off the street and from animal control.

We know that millions of dogs are euthanized each year
and thousands more are subject to cruel experimentation
despite the all out efforts of local government animal
control, national non-profit animal organizations, private
rescue groups and individual citizens.

We have all seen an abandoned or lost dog wandering
along a street, terrified, with desperation in its eyes, and we
have all experienced panic ourselves when we thought our
own on pet was missing.

You and I can become involved in the quest to save these
lost and abandoned dogs. The dogs are in their cages
waiting for you. Rescue dogs deserve a second chance.

                  ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Both Wiley I know that this book would not exist without
the tireless commitment of my wife Nancy. From her initial
encouragement, to my final sentence, she has been my
guiding light as editor and story advisor, constantly trying
to get the best out of me. Thanks, Nance.
Family members have been pivotal with their
steadfast support. I have welcomed the interest and
encouragement from my son Brian and daughter Kimberly,
her husband Jeff, his parents Brian and Linda McCann and
my granddaughters Amber and Jessica.
Enthusiastic endorsements from neighbors Phil and
Joan Favro, Steve and Penny Woodland and Ann Duey
were greatly appreciated, as were high fives from out of
state supporters Bill and Sue Macaulay. Thanks to Tom
Hessler for additional editing help and Diana Rains, for
supplying the computer magic to transfer the manuscript to
the printing company.
Nancy, Wiley and I thank Wiley’s veterinarian Dr.
Dean Henricks who has kept Wiley on the go since he was
a pup 15 years ago.
I want to thank my longtime friend Don Stover.
Together we discovered Wiley’s family under an old house.
Don found a home for Wiley’s mom Whiskey and adopted
one of Wiley’s sisters Pepper. Kimberly found homes for a
number of the pups and she and Linda also adopted a pup
Shelby.
